"So What Do I Do Now?" What Your Child's Developmental Score Actually Misses

Get in TouchYou just got your child’s developmental screening result back. Maybe it’s a number. Maybe it’s a color. Maybe it’s one of three words: typical, borderline, at risk.
You read it twice. You still don’t know what to do next.
If that’s you right now, you’re not missing something obvious. The score genuinely doesn’t tell you. It was never built to.
Why a Score Alone Leaves You With More Questions
A developmental score can only measure what it was designed to measure, one moment, one checklist, one narrow slice of your child. It can’t see how your child connects with you, what kind of week they’ve had, or what’s changed since the last time you looked.
I used to hand parents these scores routinely. Then a mom sat across from me, held her printed result in both hands, looked up, and asked, “Okay, so what do I actually do now?”
That question stuck with me. She wasn’t asking for another number. She was asking for a next step, and the score genuinely couldn’t give her one.
A “Borderline” Result Can Mean Less Than It Sounds Like
A dad once came to me holding a language screening result. His son had landed in the borderline range, one word away from typical. That single word had kept him awake for weeks. He started counting every sound his son made, comparing him to other kids, testing him during play.
When we looked at the whole picture, his son pointed to share things, brought over books to read together, copied new sounds, and understood simple directions. New words were showing up every week. The word count still mattered, we didn’t ignore it, but on its own, it had never been telling the full story.
He didn’t need another night of counting. He needed a plan for helping language grow, and a clear time to check back in.
A “Perfect” Result Doesn’t Erase a Real Concern
Here’s the flip side. A mom came in feeling relieved, her daughter had scored well in every single category. On her way out, she mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that mealtimes had been ending in tears and her daughter would only eat a handful of foods.
The checklist had never asked about that. A good score had reassured her, but it hadn’t answered the question she actually came in with.
If something is still bothering you after a “good” result, that feeling is information too, not something to second-guess.
What a Score Should Never Make You Feel
One mom looked at her child’s result and said quietly, “So this means I’ve failed him.” That sentence has stayed with me. The score never said that. But that’s the message she’d taken from it.
She’d gone to every appointment, practiced every activity, read to him, sung to him, comforted him through every hard moment. A number was never going to capture any of that. If a result has ever made you feel like you failed, that’s the score falling short, not a reflection of you as a parent.
What Actually Helps Instead of Another Score
This is exactly why I built Dr. EZ EarlyCheck. It doesn’t end with a number. You answer simple questions about your child, yes, sometimes, or not yet, and instead of one isolated score, I look at the whole pattern behind your answers: how your child communicates, moves, solves problems, plays, and connects.
Then you get an actual plan. What’s going well. What’s worth watching. Simple activities to try at home. And when it matters, exactly what to bring up at your next visit.
That’s the Dr. EZ Method in practice: detect and define what you’re actually seeing, respond thoughtfully with one clear step, evaluate and adjust as your child grows, all without panic.
When to Actually Book a Visit
Book a visit if you notice a skill your child used to have and has since lost, if a concern is showing up across more than one area of daily life, or if a worry keeps returning even after a reassuring result. You’re the one who sees your child every day. That matters more than any single score ever could.
A score tells you where your child landed. A plan tells you what to do next. You deserve the second one.
